WORKING WITH NOTES DOCUMENTS

Using Unicode to add special characters to documents
You can create or read documents that contain special characters that aren't found on your default keyboard, such as an ae dipthong (æ), a pound sign (£), or a plus/minus sign (±). To see these characters in your document, you may need additional Unicode-based fonts installed on your Microsoft® Windows® operating system. IBM® Lotus® Notes® comes with five different Monotype WorldType™ fonts to install directly from the CD-ROM.

Macintosh users: You can use Unicode, but only using characters from your native character set. English Macintosh systems do not support the use of Unicode.

Click any of these topics:

To install Unicode fonts on your system

1. Insert the Lotus Notes CD-ROM.

2. Click Start > Programs > Windows Explorer.

3. Open the CD-ROM directory, and then open the Client folder.

4. In the Client folder, open the Apps\Fonts folder.

5. Double-click Fonts.exe.

6. Specify a temporary directory to save any of the following Monotype WorldType fonts (for example, C:/Windows/Temp), and then click Unzip:

7. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.

8. Open the Fonts folder.

9. Click File > Install New Font.

10. Specify the drive and directory where you saved the above fonts, choose any one of the fonts to install, and then click OK.

To set up Lotus Notes to use Unicode fonts

If Unicode is not enabled, Lotus Notes attempts to display text using the native character set of your machine. Unicode is set to display by default.

1. Click File > Preferences > User Preferences.

2. Click Default Fonts under Display.

3. Click a Monotype WorldType font for the default fonts.

4. Click OK, and then restart Lotus Notes.

To disable using Unicode, de-select Enable unicode display under Additional options in the basic preferences.

Note If you are having trouble seeing special characters in certain documents, see Why can't I see special characters in some documents when I have installed and enabled Unicode fonts?

To add special characters to a document

You can use a compose sequence or an extended compose sequence to add a special character to a document, both of which are strings of keystrokes that produce the special character. A compose sequence string usually uses two characters and an extended compose sequence string uses multiple characters. There are also keyboard shortcuts for the Macintosh that you can use to create some special characters.

1. Put the document in edit mode.

2. Click where you want to enter the special character.

3. Do one of the following using the information available in the tables below:

Note If there are key sequences for a character listed in the Compose sequence for Windows and Extended compose sequence for Windows and Macintosh columns, you can use either sequence to add the character.

View special character table by name of character or by extended compose sequence.
