On Microsoft® Windows®, single users can install all three clients -- the IBM® Lotus® Notes® client, IBM® Lotus® Domino™ Administrator client, and IBM® Lotus® Domino™ Designer. For multi-user install on Windows and Linux®, Notes-only installation is available.

As an administrator, you can customize the installation process for your users so that they install the features that they need. The installation information in this section ranges from installing the IBM® Lotus® Domino™ clients using the installation media kit to creating transform files to customize the installation process.

Note You can customize installation of traditional Notes components using tuner capabilities. In addition, you can customize Installation of Eclipse-based features using the install manifest resident in the Lotus Notes install media kit.

Before you install Lotus Notes clients

Before you begin installing Lotus Notes clients, make sure that you or your users do the following:

• Read the release notes for information about software and hardware requirements.
• Read the considerations section of the installation topics in this guide.
• To successfully install, upgrade, and use Lotus Notes, users must be allowed both Write and Modify permissions to the Program directory, Data directory, and all associated subdirectories. Assign appropriate access rights to your Notes client users.
• You must be logged in as an administrative or root user with administrative rights to the system.
• Windows users should log onto their computers with administrative rights to install or upgrade Lotus Notes. For cases in which administrative rights are not available, enable the setting "Always install with elevated privileges." The setting "Always install with elevated privileges" is a Microsoft Windows setting that is part of Microsoft Window's User Policies. Refer to your Microsoft Windows documentation for details.
• Options for installing the Lotus Notes client on Restricted or Standard/Power user computers are described in the Microsoft Windows Installer documentation. Review the Microsoft Windows Installer documentation as necessary.
• If you are upgrading Lotus Notes on a Macintosh OS X client, turn off all options in the Application Sharing tab of the Shared System Preferences panel to avoid any errors.

There are several ways to enable Lotus Notes installation for Notes client users. In addition, there are considerations to plan for when installing this Lotus Notes release based on the features users will have access to and the environment in which they are working.

Domino offers the following methods or types of installation that you can make available to the users in your enterprise.

• Installing Notes in a single user environment -- This is usually done from the installation media kit on the CD or from files placed on the network.
• Installing Notes in a multi-user environment -- This enables you to install the Notes client for use by multiple users on the same machine and is available only for Notes client installation. Multi-user installation is not available for installing the Domino Administrator client or Domino Designer client.
• Automating client installation and using silent installation -- This can be used with or without a transform file depending on whether you want to customize the silent installation.
• Customizing client installations using the tuner -- This uses the transform file to customize the installation process.
• Customizing Notes installation using the install manifest -- This enables you to control what is installed and what appears on the feature installation panel.
• Providing a batch file for installing the clients -- This enables users to install the clients by running a batch file that you create for them.
• Providing command line utilities for installation -- This allows users to install the clients using a command line utility that you provide for them.
• Setting up Notes with a scriptable setup -- This option uses a setting in the NOTES.INI file to provide information to the client setup wizard.
• Installing and running IBM Lotus Notes client on a USB drive -- Install the IBM Lotus Notes client on a USB 2.0 drive. Lotus Notes client end-users can then log on to that USB drive and run the Notes client without having to install it on their computer.

  Note Installation of Lotus Notes 8 from a USB drive is not supported in Lotus Notes 8. Installation of Lotus Notes 8 basic configuration from a USB drive remains available .

• Installing the Domino clients in a shared network directory -- This option installs all program files to a file server while the users' data files reside on their local workstations.

  Note Shared network install is not supported in Lotus Notes 8. Shared network install of Lotus Notes 8 basic configuration remains available.
