Installation of Notes on Linux® is supported for multi-user only. For Linux, the Lotus Notes client-only is available in the Notes.ismp.linux installation media kit.

1. Shut down all applications.

Exit out of any existing versions of IBM® Workplace Managed Client™, IBM® Lotus® Sametime®, and Lotus Notes. Make sure that all processes are terminated, including eclipse/javaw, eclipse/notes2w, sametime, notes, taskldr, and nsdexec.

From a command prompt, change to the Lotus Notes data directory and type the following command:

 /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/nsd.sh -kill

3. As the root user, open a new terminal window or File Browser.

4. If you are obtaining the installation kit from a Web downloads page, open your Mozilla GTK2 browser and navigate to the Web page from which to obtain the download.

For example, obtain the installation media kit CD or open a browser and navigate to the Lotus Notes/Domino Web site at which the installation media kit resides.

7. Navigate to the directory that contains the unpacked setup.sh installation executable file.

Note Verify that the directory also contains the deploy directory, setup.sh, and updateSite.zip. These contain the needed install manifest and feature and plug-in JAR files.

Note To install, you must switch to the root user or be logged in as a root user.

10. Read and accept the license agreement terms, and then click Next.

11. Accept the default install directory or choose a different install directory.

You must install to a directory that is readable, but not writeable, by all users.

The default installation directories for a new multi-user install on Linux are listed below:

• Lotus Notes 8 product and binary files installation directory -- /opt/ibm/lotus/notes
• Data directory for each user -- /{$HOME}/lotus/notes/data
• Workspace directory for each user -- /{$HOME}/lotus/notes/data/workspace
• Lotus Notes 8 Java code installation directory -- /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/framework
Note Upgrading from Notes 7.x to Notes 8 is not supported; install to a different directory or uninstall Notes 7.x before installing Notes 8.

• Activities -- Select this to install the Activities feature. An activities server is required to use this feature.
• Sametime (integrated) -- Select this to install basic IBM® Lotus® Sametime® capabilities such as chat and live names. A Sametime server is required to use this feature.
• IBM Lotus Productivity Tools -- Select this to install IBM® Lotus® Productivity Tools including IBM Lotus Documents, IBM Lotus Presentations, and IBM Lotus Spreadsheets.
• Composite Application Editor -- Select this to install the Composite Applications Editor for use with composite applications.

A security acceptance screen from any firewalls you have installed may appear asking for confirmation, even if the installation is being done locally.

Note If errors occur and you are installing Lotus Notes on a system on which an existing version of this Lotus Notes release, such as a Beta version, may not have been properly uninstalled.

Note If installation is unsuccessful, you can open the install log file at <install_dir>/framework/rcp/installer_logs/framework_install.log.

The following information describes what was installed:

• After install, application icons are visible for all users by clicking Computer - More Application - Office. They reside in /usr/share/applications.
• The Notes installer does not create desktop shortcut icons.
• A new data directory is created for this user in /root/lotus/notes/data.
• A new workspace is created for this user in /root/lotus/notes/data/workspace.
• The Notes classic binaries are installed in <install_dir>.
• A shared data directory is created in /etc/lotus/notes/data.

After you install the Notes client, users can log in and run Notes.

1. Log in as a non-root user.

2. Start Lotus Notes by clicking the Computer option - More Applications... - New Applications - Lotus Notes 8.

3. Respond to Notes setup prompts as they appear.
